THIS WAS OUR 2015 WORKSHOP:
Alice Vander Vennen
Sunday, June 14 to Friday, June 19
5 days, $495 + HST
Enthusiastic beginners and experienced artists welcome!
Surprise yourself with possibilities by creating art that is both personal and mysterious, art that speaks of roads travelled and stories found, art that becomes the keeper of stories.
“The finder who becomes the keeper now becomes the quilter. Create mixed media assemblages that juxtapose the most unlikely elements. Textiles form the starting point, and then it is fair play, stitching together copper and cloth, button and branches, or knobs and nails. This juxtaposition is obviously not for any guest-room bed. Instead it becomes a surprising and compelling piece of mixed media art.”
We will begin the process of creating an assemblage with cutting, positioning, juxtaposing the variety of elements into a composition that speaks of a new narrative. We will combine and “quilt” the composition, allowing the found objects to become a part of the new narrative and will then frame the art work in shadow box frames.
Instruction will be given in
a. the necessary steps to creating a composition with textiles, copper, and found objects
b. the techniques used to incorporate natural materials
c. instruction in finishing, mounting and framing the art work
In her own words: I work with multiple materials, such as fabrics, branches, wire, copper, paper and ceramic shards, creating an assemblage as part of a visual language suggesting a story. The narrative speaks of gathering the work of divergent cultures, histories and generations. Materials from around the world, created by many hands, are represented in a single multimedia assemblage. Fragile branches may be used as framing devices; tapering willow twigs and knotty grape vine tentacles are bent as if resisting the interstitial pull of perhaps a hundred different textiles, each attached with thread, strings, wire and weighted with smooth stones or other found objects.
About Alice Vander Vennen: AliceVander Vennen has been a professional textile artist for over 30 years.
Her work is exhibited in private collections in Canada, the United States and Europe and is carried by numerous galleries, including the OENO Gallery in Prince Edward County.
She has had solo exhibits and participated in juried exhibits in Toronto, Chicago, New York, Philadelphia, New Mexico and Verona, Italy. Recently Alice completed a community-quilted floating sculpture commission consisting of 100 brightly adorned fish for the new Cobourg Community Centre.
Alice is a professional educator who demonstrates a passion for art and learning. She brings these passions together in dynamic textile workshops designed to elicit and celebrate the artistic voices of each participant.
Our week starts Sunday, June 14, 5:00 with a reception, gourmet dinner and an introductory talk by Alice.
Please DO NOT come earlier as we will be setting up, unless you are staying on-site, in which case you may access your room at 4:00. There will be time to set up your space and unpack your materials after the opening dinner.
The workshop runs Monday through Thursday, 9:00 to 4:00, and Friday 9:00 to 2:00 with delicious snacks and lunches each day. An hour of yoga follows each workshop day on the banks of the Noisy River. We have a limited number of yoga mats to share, so please bring your own mat if you have one.
The studio will remain open every night until 10:00 PM for the duration of the workshop for those who want to work into the evening.
A closing dinner is served Thursday evening and the workshop concludes
Friday, June 19, around 2:00 after a late lunch and wrap up.
Alice’s material list:
- yoga mat
- beverage of your choice, if you might like a glass at the end of the day
- remnants or any small pieces of embroidered material that can be cut and repositioned into an art piece
- small stones, (nothing larger than a toonie) small twigs or leaves or any natural material (I will bring lots of dried preserved leaves)
- sewing materials such as threads, yarn, and needle and scissors
- any pieces of textiles or fabrics that one might want to use
- and if desired, but not necessary, a sewing machine
Alice will bring all the frames and framing materials and everything necessary to have everyone leave the workshop with at least one piece of framed art work. Participants will have the option of purchasing the frames and matt for the cost of $15.00.
