Suitable for experienced painters who want to expand into another medium.
As well as learning techniques of working with cold wax medium and oil, this workshop will focus on the balance between playful, intuitive exploration and an understanding of composition and design. Each participant will have lots of individual attention as they experiment with this medium, while developing their own painting vocabulary and personal direction. Come with an openness to play and explore.
In her own words: I work in a very intuitive way, not knowing what the outcome will be. The process involves searching for a balance between the spontaneous and the deliberate.
More about Janice: Janice is represented by galleries in Canada and the U.S. Her work is included in numerous corporate and public collections both in Canada and internationally, including among others, The Government of Ontario Art Collection; The Schulich School of Business (York University), CIBC World Markets (London), First Gulf, Intrawest Corporation, the Senvest Collection (Montreal) and Cenovus Energy (Calgary).
Our week starts Sunday, July 26 with a 5:00 reception, gourmet dinner and an introductory talk by Janice.
Please DO NOT come earlier as we will be setting up, unless you are staying on-site, in which case you may access your room at 4:00. There will be time to set up your space and unpack your materials after the opening dinner.
The workshop runs Monday through Thursday, 9:00 to 4:00, and Friday 9:00 to 2:00 with delicious snacks and lunches each day. An hour of yoga follows each workshop day on the banks of the Noisy River. We have a limited number of yoga mats to share, so please bring your own mat if you have one.
The studio will remain open every night until 10:00 PM for the duration of the workshop for those who want to work into the evening.
A closing dinner is served Thursday evening, and the workshop concludes
Friday, July 31, around 2:00 after a late lunch and wrap up.

Included in your workshop fee is the cost of a scraper tool that will be provided by Janice.
15-20 pre-Gesso’d painting supports (see below for Gesso instructions)
10×10”, 12 x 12 “, 9 x 12”, no larger than 16×16” please
Here are some options:
1. Ampersand Gessoboard-cradled
2. Panels made of 1/8” ply with sides that are 1-1 ½”deep.
3. ¼” Masonite from a lumberyard. They can cut them for you to size.
Oil Paints: see list below
2 sheets of Arches Oil Paper or Terraskin Paper
Printmaking Brayer (at least one) 4” SOFT rubber brayer (not the hard one)
2 or more palette knives of various sizes
Cotton rags (LOTS); you can cut up t-shirts or buy rags at a hardware store. Not flannel.
Latex, vinyl gloves or protective cream for hands
Palette: 12×16 or larger, palette paper, freezer paper or a glass palette if you wish
Apron (this is messy)
Green or blue masking tape
Newspaper for lifting off wax/oil
Pad of construction paper
Bottle of vegetable oil for cleaning up
Roll of wax paper
(optional) Pigment Sticks: one or two-try R&F encaustic pigment sticks
Texturing materials: see note below
OIL PAINTS: highly recommended bring 1 or 2 small tubes, or one large tube of each
Hansa Yellow Light (any brand)
Indian Yellow (any brand)
Phthalo Blue (green shade) Windsor Newton: Windsor Blue-green shade
Phthalo Blue (red shade) Windsor Newton: Windsor Blue-red shade
Quinacridone Magenta (any brand)
Perylene Red (Gamblin) or Quinacrydone Red (any brand)
Zinc White (any brand) at least one Large Tube
Titanium White (any brand) at least one Large Tube
Asphaltum – only Gamblin, Kama Pigments and Van Gogh make this colour of paint.
To make textures in the oil/wax surface, bring along various implements and objects to create textures, such as, combs, wooden BBQ skewers for drawing into the wax, string, netting, mesh, bubble pad, textured wallpapers, anything you can think of that would make an interesting texture. Fabric with a heavy, raised texture works well—upholstery fabric.
If you paint in oils and have your own palette, then bring what you like, making sure that you have all of the primary colours plus asphaltum as well as large tubes of zinc white and titanium white. If you do not paint in oils, I’d highly recommend using the oil paints noted in the list above.
IMPORTANT: HOW TO GESSO YOUR PANELS
Please bring your panels Gessoed and ready to go.
I use a good quality gesso – Golden Gesso – to prepare my wooden painting panels.
I use a 4” foam brush (not a foam roller. It makes the surface rough). Brush the gesso onto the surface in one direction. When thoroughly dry, lightly sand the surface.
Apply a second coat of gesso brushing the gesso in the opposite direction.
Let dry. Lightly sand.
Apply third coat of gesso, brushing in the direction of the first coat.
Let dry. Lightly sand.
If you use a cheaper quality, be sure to apply at least three coats, and 4 or more would be best. You want a nice smooth surface.
If you decide to use ¼” masonite panels, be sure to gesso the backside of the panels with one or two coats of gesso. This will keep the panel from warping.
